Sephora's annual holiday savings event begins today for all rouge members, with VIB and insiders shopping the sale next week. The tiers for members are as follows: rouge gets 20% off their entire purchase, VIB's get 15% off, and insiders get 10%. I did a little more damage this year so I'm officially back to VIB status. I look forward to this event every year because it's the perfect time to either stock up on my favorite products or try something new at a discount. The code is YAYHOLIDAY

What I'm Buying:

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner in Iconic Nude: I absolutely love Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk lip liner (I wear it every day), but I want to try a more nude shade. It seems just as wearable and a lot of people I know swear by it.

Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Hair Spray: This is holy grail for me. My hair gets frizzy no matter what time of year it is, and this spray provides incredible shine and smoothness without it being stiff, sticky, or weighing my hair down. Plus it smells so luxurious, and the scent lasts until the next wash!

Farmacy Honey Harvest Hydration Kit: Farmacy has quickly become my go-to skincare brand. Not only is it clean, but it is also effective. I have the honeymoon glow serum already, in fact, I'm on my third bottle! This set includes that, along with their newest plumping serum and their hydration mask that feels so good to use at night. It warms up as you apply it to the skin and leaves it soft and hydrated. If you haven't tried Farmacy beauty, this is a great way to start.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Vanilla Beige: I used Summer Fridays coconut body lotion all Summer long and loved it. I've been curious about their butter lip balm after seeing so many positive reviews of it so I'm giving it a try. Overall I just appreciate the aesthetic of the brand.

Sephora Collection Ultra Glow Serum: I need a new vitamin C serum but they are all quite expensive. I like the one that Drunk Elephant makes but I just don't feel like spending the money (even with a discount). I'm hoping this serum will be a cheaper alternative! I'll keep you guys posted.

Other products I would highly recommend are:

Necessaire Body Lotion: Works like a charm on dry, sensitive skin (and I have problems with eczema)

Sunday Riley Good Genes: I use this on the nights that I don't use the Farmacy Honeymoon glow. Instantly leaves skin looking more plump and bright.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: This is also holy grail. My husband uses it too and often steals it from my nightstand. Best moisturizer I've tried for chapped, cracked lips.

Charlotte Tilbury ANYTHING. Really though, it's my favorite makeup brand for a reason. Treat yourself!

Will you be shopping the Sephora sale this year?

Now that I'm well into my 30's, I've become extremely diligent about taking good care of my skin. I wear sunscreen religiously, I moisturize and exfoliate, and I drink a lot of water! A couple areas that I've been guilty of neglecting though are my chest and neck. They were always afterthoughts during my daily skincare routines, when really they should be just as important as the face.

I've had horrible lines on my chest since I was 21, and although I find them terribly embarrassing, I wasn't sure how to treat them or make them disappear. As a side-sleeper, I knew that they were going to be chronic unless I changed my sleep position, but no matter what I try at night, I always end up on my side. Every morning I wake up with embedded lines and wrinkles down my chest.

I've tried silicone patches as a quick fix, but I want results that will last. I've even thought about getting botox for my chest wrinkles, but I know it will be expensive and I don't want to go that route if I don't need to. When I was contacted by a local beauty brand that specializes in products for the chest and neck, I knew I wanted to give it a shot. Lola Collective produces 3 key products with ingredients that target lines and wrinkles in the delicate chest and neck area. The goal is to repair, plump, and rejuvenate.

Good Night Decolletage Sleep Mask: This is a thick, rich cream that I've been using every night before bed. I'm pretty generous with it. I'm convinced that this layer of hydration is what really helps with the lessening of the lines. I still end up sleeping on my side, but this at least keeps the skin moisturized and the next day, the appearance of the lines isn't as severe as they were without using this.

Damage Control Vitamin C Primer: We know vitamin C is good to incorporate into our daily skincare routine, so it offers the same benefits to our chest and neck. I use this every morning and it instantly (I mean instantly) firms and tightens.

Bright Morning Decolletage Smoothing Cream: After the primer, I then apply this super thick smoothing cream. Out of the 3 products, this is the one that shows the most dramatic difference in my chest lines. It took a couple weeks, but after using it every day I'm no longer as self conscious about wearing a low-cut top or even my bikini.

The results are pretty great in my opinion. The before was taken when I first received the products and had not started using them yet. These photos are all in natural light with no retouching. What you see is what you get!
Before

After

Also After (about 3 weeks into using the products)

I'll definitely continue using these products as part of my regular skin routine. These products were sent to me, but I will absolutely buy them on my own and am so happy that a local southern California company is behind them! For a complete list of ingredients and to learn more about Lola Skincare Collective, go to their website.

If you have any questions, let me know!

6.24.2020

I bought most of these products in April, and since I've had time to put each of them to the test, I wanted to share my feedback. From now on, I will do monthly reviews on the beauty products that I have purchased from either a month or two before. I love sharing my honest opinions, and hope that some of you will find them helpful in case you are thinking of trying them too!

Tatcha The Silk Peony Eye Melt Cream:
I really wanted to fall in love with this eye cream, but after using it every morning and evening for two months, I don't think I'll buy it once it runs out. The formula feels thin, and I prefer a thicker, richer consistency. It absorbs very quickly which makes it ideal for daytime, but it doesn't provide enough lasting moisture. I also haven't noticed much of a difference in my under eye area, and for the price, I expected at least some change in puffiness and dark circles. I absolutely love my Tatcha silk canvas primer and was certain that an eye cream by the brand would blow me away, but I'm disappointed. I plan on going back to Origins or Kiehls in the Fall when I really need extra hydration.

Recommend: No

Drunk Elephant Time to Wake Up:
These serums are bundled together and I use them as such, so it's hard to tell which makes more of a difference in my skin. I use one small pump of each, mix them in on my fingertips a bit, and then pat them onto my skin before my moisturizer/sunscreen. The C-firma is very sticky and smells unpleasant, while the B-hydra is smooth with not much fragrance. Once applied, the scent goes away and the texture of my skin immediately softens. They do provide some sort of a glow as well. I really love the idea of a "time to wake up" serum in the morning, but I wouldn't say that it's absolutely necessary. A good eye cream and an allover moisturizer with SPF does the trick!

Recommend: Yes, if your skin is dull and needs something extra

Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo:
I initially loved this shampoo, but after a few weeks, I am now on the fence! It makes my hair incredibly soft, adds a ton of moisture, and smells like candy. You also need the tiniest pea sized amount! The only downfall is that because it's so thick, you really need to make sure that you rinse it out extremely well or otherwise it will leave a film. You also need to use a clarifying shampoo a couple times a month in order to get rid of any buildup, but I do that anyway because I've had some issues with my scalp in the past. It would be amazing to find a shampoo that takes care of every problem, but I have yet to discover one. I think if you have super thick, damaged, or color-treated hair then you will enjoy this shampoo. I'm going to keep using it.

Recommend: Yes, but don't use too much and rinse well

Blossom Nail Polish Remover Spring Bouquet:
Since I'm back to doing my own manicures (even before Covid really), I was down to the last drop of my previous polish remover and was wanting one that didn't contain acetone. My cuticles are always dry, and acetone makes the dryness and peeling worse. I spotted this at Target and decided to give it a go. It's organic, acetone-free, and doesn't smell like a typical nail polish remover. The floral scent is okay, but the reason why I like it so much is that it feels like a cuticle oil! It's actually moisturizing which totally surprised me. It does take a little more patience to remove polish, but it does the trick! I haven't tried it on real gel polish (only gel-like such as Essie's gel couture), but I'm really happy with this safe, non-toxic formula.

Recommend: Yes

I hope you enjoyed these reviews, and let me know if you've tried any of the products! I have some good stuff to review next month.

4.14.2020

When it comes to hair, I'm all about low maintenance. It's not necessarily because I don't have the time or desire to do more, it's because I don't have the patience. Like all of my beauty routines, I prefer a simple, more natural style. I want to enhance what I like, conceal what I don't, and above all I want to look and feel my best. Beauty doesn't have to be complicated - in fact, it really shouldn't be.

A hair routine does involve some trial and error. It's taken me years to figure out what types of products I like, what I'm willing to budget for, areas where I can cut costs and corners, and a hair stylist that really knows my preferences. It wasn't always this easy; I've tried so many different brands both from the drugstore and higher end. You have to figure out what you're really aiming for and you have to be realistic. I'm a naturally dark brunette, so going platinum blonde or even a honey blonde just isn't in the cards for me. I could try, but I'd ruin my hair and that's the last thing I'd want! So I stick with my brown locks, try my best to work with my natural wavy, frizzy texture and I focus on adding lots of moisture and shine. I do have some lighter balayage at the crown, but I do very little color treating and am planning on going a bit darker again. I also trim my hair every few weeks to get rid of any dead ends. I had to cancel my appointment right before the quarantine began so it's not in the best shape at the moment! Once it's safer to leave home, I'm hoping to get in to see my stylist for a refresh.

Until then, this is my low fuss routine. It won't work for everyone or every hair type, but I hope some of you find the tips useful.

My hair type: each strand is fine, but I have a lot of it. It is naturally wavy and very frizz prone.

1) Shampoo every three days or twice per week.
I currently use a shampoo called Clear but I believe it's being totally discontinued. I used to buy it at the drugstore, but can barely find it online. Are any of you familiar with it? Heidi Klum was the spokesperson ages ago. The idea is that good hair begins at the scalp and I am a huge advocate for that. My scalp tends to get very dry, so I focus on its health every time I wash. Unfortunately I also have oily hair, so that's a winning combination. Shampooing every three days seems to be the lucky number for me.

2) Use a scalp scrub or mask twice a month.
I've written about this scalp therapy here, and I've noticed a difference. My scalp is less itchy, less flaking occurs, and less congested. Remember, your scalp is still skin! It can get clogged and irritated just as your face can.

3) Deep condition once a week.
A nourishing deep conditioning treatment is vital to maintaining healthy hair. I usually leave mine on while I shave and cleanse my body so it can really work its magic...the longer it stays on the better. I also use an overnight mask when my ends are especially brittle, then wash and rinse it out the following day.

4) Air dry when possible. Otherwise, limit heat styling.
Now that many of us are staying home, why not give the heat styling a rest? I've completely taken a break from straightening and curling. I can't quite give up the blow dryer, but I use a low heat setting and then seal the ends with a blast from the cool button.

5) Don't overdo dry shampoo.
It's tempting to slap on the dry shampoo when you want an extra day to avoid washing it, but dry shampoos cause so much buildup. My hair stylist has told me some truly disgusting horror stories! I won't share here, but let's just say she's seen an increase in awful scalp issues over the last couple years because dry shampoo has skyrocketed in popularity. Now there's nothing wrong with it per se and we all want to simplify our daily hair routines by washing it less. Just be careful of how frequently and how much you're using.

6) Limit the amount of styling products you use.
Less is more. Piling on different products to achieve certain results seems like a great idea, but it all can end up doing more harm than good. I know that my hair looks weighed down very easily, so I use a leave-in conditioner while my hair is damp, then follow up with an anti-humidity/shine spray once it's all dry. You really don't need more than two or three products max, and a little goes a long way. It also cuts down on cost. I can't afford to be buying Oribe or Ouai every other month.

What's your daily or weekly hair routine? Do you like to experiment with yours, or are you low maintenance? If you're someone who loves playing with trends and color, how do you care for your hair? I could talk about it all day!

10.24.2019

I'm so excited because as you are reading this, I'm on a plane en route to New York! I can't think of a better way to celebrate Fall than with a trip to the east coast! We don't have any set plans, but I'll be sure to share everything we did once we get back next week.

In the meantime, I wanted to put together a round-up of all the beauty products and treatments I've been using for the last month (some products I've been in love with for much longer than that). I think a lot of people switch up their beauty routines for the changing season, and Fall is the time where I really like to focus on hydration to combat dryness and dullness, as well as a more sophisticated and polished makeup look. In the Summer I just wing it and often go without much makeup at all!

Let's start with nails though. I've always loved doing my own. Growing up, my mom was a manicurist and I learned a lot by watching her do her clients' nails. A couple years ago, I decided to try gel polish for the first time and I enjoyed the results so much that I unintentionally turned it into a bi-monthly habit. I never experienced any issues or had any concerns until my nails started breaking more frequently over the Summer and they even became sore to the touch. The last time I got the gel polish removed was painful, so I knew it was time to give my poor nails a break. It's been exactly one month and I'm just now beginning to polish them myself again (just regular polish). They look fine, but I'm keeping them very short and applying this nail strengthener a few times a week to get them back into good condition. Honestly, it's been fun rediscovering all the lovely colors I'd been neglecting. I'm sticking to light, neutral shades until I feel confident wearing darker colors again. I will probably do gel nails at some point, maybe for Christmas, but letting my natural nails breathe is my focus this season.

Normally around this time, I like to start wearing bolder lips in shades of plum and wine. Since buying the Charlotte Tilbury pillow talk kit during the Nordstrom anniversary sale, I haven't had any desire to put anything else on my lips! It truly is the most wearable, sexy, flattering shade I've ever worn, and it lasts long too. That's not to say I won't pull out some of my other Fall favorites, but it's not going to be easy! I keep the liner, lipstick, and gloss in my bag so they're always on hand. You really need to try pillow talk if you haven't already!

As for hair, as soon as I discovered the Ouai this year, I have been completely hooked on their products. I really don't put much in my hair, but their leave-in conditioner is a must before blow drying. It leaves my hair soft and manageable, and the smell is incredible. So much so that I bought the corresponding perfume last month and have been wearing it daily. I also wanted to mention these hair ties called invisibobbles. Have you guys seen these? I put my hair up a lot now when I'm at home, and these hold it all in place without leaving any kinks or marks afterward. I keep one in my bag and the rest are scattered throughout my house! I just hope I don't end up losing them all, which is inevitably what happens.

Lastly, I know you've probably seen these products before on the blog in some capacity, but these are hands-down my must-haves in my makeup collection. I use them daily!

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD foundation: full to medium buildable coverage that looks natural and beautiful especially in photos. I've been wearing it for years.

Tarte Shape Tape concealer: The only concealer you need! I dot some under my eyes, as well as on any spots I may have going on in the chin area.

Tatcha The Silk Canvas primer: I use this with or without makeup for an even complexion and less noticeable pores. It glides on so smoothly and feels very moisturizing. Clearly I need another one asap!

Fenty Pro Filtr Powder in lavender: I'm convinced this is why my makeup lasts much longer than it used to. Just a few swipes to set everything in place and I'm good to go. Also, don't let the shade fool you - it's translucent.

Does your beauty routine change in the Fall? What are some of your favorites?

I'll be back later next week with another post. See you here!

There's nothing more frustrating than getting a giant cystic pimple on my face. It seems that every month like clockwork, one pops up overnight. This normally happens around my menstrual cycle so although I can carefully time it, there's still a feeling of helplessness. There's only so much I can do to prevent and then ultimately treat a cystic pimple.

That doesn't stop me from trying.

If you're unfamiliar with cystic acne, consider yourself lucky! Those who've experienced them know what I'm talking about - red, swollen, painful bumps that form deep in the pore underneath the skin's surface. I get them on my chin, around my mouth, and along my jawline which is a classic symptom of hormonal imbalance. They're so stubborn that I typically get them in the exact same spots as previous flareups. So even though I can expect them every single month, there are a few steps I take to prevent "a big one." Some bumps are more manageable than others.

A little backstory on my skin: I had combination skin as a teenager with occasional breakouts on my t-zone. My chin was the home of cystic acne, especially around my period. I went on birth control pills when I was 18, and my skin was quite happy about that! The tone and texture evened out. I still would develop occasional bumps, but instead of getting them monthly, they would occur maybe yearly. In fact, my skin became pretty dry during my late twenties, and acne was no longer an issue until I went off of birth control two years ago. The progression was fast. My skin immediately began producing more oil and I tossed out my thick moisturizers and heavy oils in favor of lighter weight products more suitable for acne prone skin. I've read that if you had problem skin before birth control, then you will likely deal with it after stopping birth control. Of course every case is different, but many women take birth control pills to regulate their hormones so once they stop, hormones can go haywire.

My skincare routine isn't perfect just yet, but I've found that these steps have indeed made my monthly visitors less painful and more tolerable:

Cleanse:
Girl, wash your face! I don't have to remind you that it's the single most important step in any skincare regimen. My most used cleanser is Cetaphil, and you can easily find it at your local drugstore. It's gentle enough for all skin types, and it cleanses without stripping your skin of essential oils. Lately I've been using this cleanser by Kate Somerville, but any basic oil-free face wash is just fine. It's not about the price or brand, but about the ingredients.

Exfoliate:
When you have acne flare-ups, you realize how crucial it is to exfoliate your entire face at least once per week. There are two types of exfoliants - physical and chemical. Physical exfoliation such as a scrub is the most common way to slough off dead skin cells. I use the Vasanti Brighten Up! Cleanser about twice a week in place of a regular cleanser. The little grains are just effective enough to work into a slight lather and rinse clean. You really need to be mindful of avoiding abrasive scrubs though - too harsh (or larger grains) can cause the reverse effect and can damage/tear your skin! Chemical exfoliation uses - you guessed it - chemicals to remove dead skin cells and create cell turnover. I personally feel that this form of exfoliation is the most effective. Not only does it remove buildup from the pores, but it also instantly brightens the skin. I use my favorite Kate Somerville ExfoliKate once a week, concentrating on my chin and jawline.

Mask:
The week before my menstrual cycle, I make sure that the lower half of my face gets extra attention every night. I use a clay or charcoal mask to deep clean and detoxify the entire area around my mouth and on my chin. I rinse with cool water for a squeaky clean finish.

Moisturize:
I don't care how oily your skin is, moisturizing is a must! A non-greasy, oil-free lotion is what I prefer daily, and then I use a serum by Glo Skin Beauty at nighttime. It contains salicylic acid which gets rid of excess oil and deep cleans the pores. It helps prevent future breakouts.

Treatments:
Okay, now here's what I do when I first begin to feel a big red bump coming on. I wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and then hold it to the affected spot for a few minutes. This helps to reduce the redness and swelling. After that, I mix a bit of benzoyl peroxide (it kills the bacteria) with some hydrocortizone cream and apply a thin layer to the pimple. This works best overnight! I usually notice a decrease in size of the pimple the next morning, and the hydrocortizone helps eliminate much of the redness. I do this for a couple nights until the pimple disappears or starts to come up to the surface where it dries out within a few days.

I've tried so many different acne clearing products over the years but this system has worked the best for me. Like I said, it isn't perfect and I'm still in the process of figuring it all out. If you have any advice, please let me know in the comments or send me an email! Hormonal acne isn't fun, but it also doesn't have to control your life either. I hope some of you found this helpful!

6.07.2019

Last month, I discovered 5 new beauty products that I'm absolutely loving and highly recommend you try. I don't say that too often because everyone is different and beauty preferences are personal. However, I feel like many of you would love these products and the results they give.

{Just a reminder that I always show products in natural light}

I came across this highlighter palette through Michele1218. I've followed her for years on YouTube and really trust her recommendations, so when she featured this palette a few weeks ago, I knew I needed to try it too. There are three universally flattering shades: pearl, golden quartz, and rose gold. All three are super soft and buttery, with the most gorgeous shimmer that's easy to blend out for that perfect Summer glow. I use the golden quartz and rose gold shades across my cheekbones, and pearl in the corners of my eyes. All three have great color payoff. I'm impressed! If there's one product you try from my reviews, let it be this!

I prefer using powders most of the year because I have oily skin, but come Summer, I reach for lightweight creams and gels that last through heat. Cloud paint in Dusk is a gorgeous wash of tawny nude that lasts for hours. I use a stippling brush to swirl it onto the apples of my cheeks, and it creates a seamless stain of natural color. It doesn't even look like makeup, just your body's own natural flush.
Boy Brow is a tinted gel with the smallest brush. It contains tiny fibers that adhere to your brows to make them look fuller and polished. You guys know I hate how thin my eyebrows are from my bad teenage years of over tweezing. There isn't a ton I can do to correct those mistakes, but this gel really does fill in the sparse areas and gives my brows more depth.
Both of these products are the cornerstones of the brand, and I can definitely see why.

I'm not one to switch up my setting powder or foundations, but I kept seeing so much buzz around this product. My NYX HD powder was almost empty, so during the Sephora Spring sale last month, I ordered the Pro Filt'r setting powder in lavender. Having a lavender hued setting powder may seem strange, but it goes on completely translucent and is the silkiest powder I've ever felt. I have fairly oily skin, and this sets my makeup all day long. It's quite expensive, especially in comparison to NYX, but I have a feeling I'm not going to want to go back. It leaves a natural, soft matte finish.

I'm extremely happy with the coverage and lasting power of my favorite concealer, but I was still craving a bit more brightness underneath my eyes. I wanted to look fresh and youthful, and this brightening corrector from Becca helps achieve just that. It's a cream product that feels slightly tacky to the touch. I use my ring finger to apply a small amount underneath my eyes, on top of concealer. I pat and press it on, so the heat of my finger warms up the product, and then I use a small brush to set it with the Fenty powder mentioned above. The effect isn't quite Kardashian-esque, but close!

Let me know if you try any of these! I always like hearing your thoughts. Happy shopping 💋

I have a thing for mascara that comes packaged in a pink tube.

It all started with Too Faced better than sex mascara. I absolutely loved it, but the higher price point was hard to justify so I graduated to a less-expensive-but-just-as good drugstore alternative called lash paradise. Most recently, I decided I needed to try lash slick from Glossier after reading so many positive reviews.

They all happen to come in a pretty shiny pink tube. Coincidence?

As I was putting on my makeup the other day, I realized that a comparison of these 3 popular mascaras might be helpful. For reference, I have extremely short sparse lashes so I take all the help I can get. I've toyed with the idea of lash extensions but my eyes are super sensitive and the fear of an allergic reaction is very real! I prefer mascara that builds volume while still looking clean (meaning no clumps) and I like them to look defined. Read my thoughts on each mascara below.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, $24: I was introduced to this mascara by my best friend a few years ago and have been purchasing it on and off since. I love the formula, as it effortlessly creates volume with just one coat. It also holds a curl quite well. My only complaint is that the large wand is difficult to maneuver at times, and I often feel like I'm not coating every single little lash particularly in the corners. However, I keep going back to this mascara because overall it really does make my natural lashes look as full as they can.

Pros: Lots of volume and length, holds curl, does not flake
Cons: $$$ and giant wand/brush

L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, $10: I don't know if this mascara was created with Too Faced better than sex in mind, but they are mysteriously very very similar. The volume is unreal. I would say I prefer L'Oreal overall - I even like this wand much more because it isn't as large as the Too Faced version. However, the formula dries out ridiculously fast! After about a month and a half, I have to go buy another tube! So is it really worth it to spend 10 dollars on one tube practically every other month? Well yes, because I do! But I still go back and forth between this and Too Faced. It really just depends on my mood.

Pros: Lots of volume and length, useful wand/brush, holds a curl, $
Cons: Formula starts out perfectly but then dries out quickly, a little flaking sometimes

Glossier Lash Slick Mascara, $16:  I really am on the fence with this one. I love the narrow plastic wand because it allows me to get right in at the base of my lashes so I can coat each one. I love how dark and inky the formula is. I also love that it lengthens and defines. But it's a very natural looking mascara and even after trying to build some volume, any volume at all, I just can't get my stubby lashes to cooperate. Maybe I need to wait a few more weeks until it begins drying out a bit? If any of you have tried lash slick (I think Rachelle from PinkSole uses this) then please tell me what I'm missing? I don't dislike it but I won't be buying it again.

Pros: Good size and shape of wand, dark shiny color, really lengthens and separates each lash
Cons: Not good for volume

I would recommend Too Faced and L'Oreal, I would say pass on Glossier. If you have any questions, let me know.

Before I go, I wanted to quickly share what I ordered from Sephora's Spring sale. It was opened late last week for Rouge members, but it's now also open to VIB and Insiders. I'm a VIB and used code HEYVIB to get 15% off my entire order. Beauty products rarely go on sale so I took advantage and am trying new things I've had my eyes on for awhile. I'll report back soon but if you need any recommendations I'd go with this spray by Ouai (it's part of the reason why I'm trying their masque) or anything in this post!

Have a great weekend!

"Bloom where you are planted"

Glo Minerals has been so generous to me over the years and I have written honestly about my appreciation for both their makeup and skin products. This collection for Spring '17 is right up there with my favorites. It's called Full Bloom and is one of three limited edition color collections, with a nod towards metallic blends and peach tones. Because I have light skin but dark features, the collection really enhances my lips, cheeks, and eye color.

The kit includes:
Cream blush in Fig
Full Bloom eye shadow quad  - harvest, suede, mahogany, and dusk
Cream shadow stick in Keepsake (which I already own)
Gloss in Pueblo

Price: $58

Each kit comes with a card that explains how to apply each of the products, so for the purpose of this post, I decided to follow the directions on the back. I used the entire cream shadow stick all over my lid, and even dabbed a bit on my brow bones and blended it out. I then applied all four of the shadows on my lids, using the dark dusk color as a liner. As usual, the shadows are all finely milled, pigmented but easy to blend, and very soft. They also have a satin finish, which I prefer. Matte can look too drying, while shimmer can look too tween so satin is the perfect in-between.

However my favorite products from the collection are the cream blush in Fig, and the gloss in Pueblo. The blush gave me pause because it looks so dark in the pan, but it really comes across as the perfect peachy glow. And the gloss! The gloss is non-sticky, moisturizing, and the perfect peach. It's my first go at trying either of these products from the line but it won't be my last.

When I think of Spring makeup, words like "fresh", "youthful", and "glow" come to mind. I like my makeup and clothing to match all of the beautiful greenery and colorful flowers around me. I think it's safe to say that this kit encompasses these quite nicely, and you'll be seeing this look on my face a lot! As usual, Glo was kind enough to send me these products but all opinions are my own.

How do you like to switch up your makeup for Spring?

1.18.2017

This post contains products that were sent to me by Sio Beauty. The thoughts expressed below are all my own.

Something I've been self-conscious about since my early twenties are the lines that have formed on my chest. I thought it was due to sun exposure, but the real culprit is that I am a consistent side-sleeper. I can't sleep on my back nor stomach, and I spend countless nights tossing and turning from side to side. The results are massive lines running down my decollete and chest (in a word, gravity is my problem). They don't go away either. I often tell Nate NOT to take close up photos of pretty necklaces I wear in my outfit posts because I'm so embarrassed of these noticeable wrinkles. I also don't use photoshop, so what you see is what you get.

When I was contacted by a representative from Sio Beauty about trying a product designed to lessen the appearance of these wrinkles, I knew I had to!

I was sent two products that promised to smooth my wrinkles overnight. The first are the cleansing pads. I used one pad per night on my chest and cleavage area to ensure that the product would adhere properly to my skin and to get rid of any oils or residue from the day. After a few quick swipes, I then applied the skinpad to my chest where the lines are most visible.

The skinpad is made from silicone and oxygen. According to the website, "these basic atoms are crosslinked with hydrogen and carbon, helping your skin to hydrate, plump, and smooth itself." The great thing about the pad is that it didn't feel constricting. I honestly didn't even know that it was there. That was my main concern with the pad - I wasn't convinced it would feel comfortable during sleep and I thought it would move every time I did. Fortunately, the pad stayed in place. They are reusable too, which is super convenient. I just run them under water for a few seconds, pat dry, and store them on the sheet that they arrived on.

I'm incredibly impressed with the results If you've read here before, you probably know that I have dry, irritated skin. Moisture is my best friend, and these pads are perfect for providing that. Because of my eczema, I have to constantly hydrate and keep up with a good skincare routine in order to prevent any further issues. I never realized that wrinkles would be a big part of that as well. In the before and after, there is a noticeable difference in the smoothness of my skin. You can see where the pad previously had been placed, and if anything, I'd want a larger pad. I'd use them everywhere! My skin also felt much more supple in comparison to the rest of my body. There was some redness for a about 15 minutes but that disappeared. I would definitely recommend this product and will be buying some with my own money once the weather warms up and I need to break out my bathing suit. I wish I had these for my wedding day when I wore my sweetheart neckline dress. Oh well, now I know. Pricing is $99.95 for a single purchase, or there is an option for auto-delivery every 30, 60, or 90 days at $69.95. Something worth thinking about if you have a special event coming up, or if you are like me and just want a smoother appearance in that area.

Most of the time, I take my duty very seriously in regards to testing beauty products I've either purchased myself or have been sent to by a company. I'll use them for at least a few weeks, maybe even months, before I feel comfortable giving you my opinion. New products come out at rapid speed, and it's been ages since I've had the desire to keep up with every whim. Trying out new things is fun of course, but I also enjoy having a small collection of products that I love and use frequently. I feel an obligation to be honest with you guys. If I don't like something, I write it! That's the reason behind blogging, isn't it? I'm not a beauty editor nor makeup artist, just an average consumer.

Once in awhile, I buy on impulse and when that product happens to be amazing, it's instant gratification. I am compelled to share.

Here are two completely impulsive-I-really-didn't-need-this buys that I've been using daily since stumbling upon them.

While Nate and I were in San Clemente last week, I popped into a local boutique right next to our favorite bar. The clothes were alright, the jewelry was meh, but this perfume oil caught my attention right away. I've heard of it before. If you've ever smelled plumeria, then you know this scent well. This is actually made in Hawaii, and its namesake Kai, means ocean or ocean water, in Hawaiian. Anything that reminds me of my favorite place is a winner in my world. Smelling like Hawaii will cost you though - this little oil was $48 dollars, a small price to pay for a daily reminder of the islands. Cheaper than a plane ticket, but not nearly as cool. Still, I'll take it. I can't go there as often as I'd like, so this will suffice. Talk about a memory trigger. The best part is that the scent lasts a full day. I use the roller ball on my pulse points and behind my ears.

What is it with me and highlighting powders? One, maybe two, should be enough but somehow shiny products that promise to make me look like a glowing newborn babe suck me in. This is part of a collection by M.A.C. but they are permanent. This is an "extra dimension skinfinish" in "soft frost" and my God is it good. Do you know the look of aurora borealis crystals in the light? That's what this reminds me of. It comes across as a golden white at first glance, but when you catch the light, the effect is more like a violet blue. I'm telling you, don't be afraid of these. I've read reviews where people spoke about them being glittery or too unnatural but I don't understand that conclusion. I've worn it in my last three outfit posts and although you can't really tell, I swear it adds the perfect amount of ethereal shine. My goal is to get a good picture of it on my cheeks soon, so stay tuned for that.

Do you ever buy beauty products on impulse?

As much as I love browsing Sephora, Ulta, and any drugstore in my area, I've come to the realization that I'm a complete bore when it comes to actually wearing makeup. It's pretty to look at, but ultimately I like doing just that most days - looking at it, and then proceeding to reach for easy neutral products that will get me ready in under ten minutes. I used to have fun with makeup, but now I prefer to enhance the features I like and just accept the ones I don't. I have a round face. That's a fact, deal with it. My brows are thinner than I'd like, my lashes are short, and I have a bump on my nose thanks to a dodgy game of dodgeball during elementary school. Instead of contouring myself to death, or spending money on lash extensions, I've come to terms that this is it! Quite possibly as good as it's gonna get.

But, there is one product I've been using for months now that makes getting ready still somewhat enjoyable. I hope this mini review helps you too if you're trying to downsize and cut back on time.

This is my foray into the Charlotte Tilbury line, and it definitely does not disappoint! I can understand why so many gurus love her products. I purchased this on sale during Nordstrom's anniversary back in the Summer, and I honestly have not used much of anything since. Everything you need is conveniently right here. Three neutral shadows, two VERY pigmented blushes (one peachy, one rose colored), a bronzer, and a beautiful natural looking highlighter that I slap on my eyes and cheeks. These colors are so universally flattering that I think many people will appreciate it. The powders are all smooth, pigmented, and long lasting. I'm tempted to try more from her line, especially her lipsticks but I'm holding back for now. If you're ever wondering what I'm wearing in my photos or on snap, it's this palette.

Note - I checked Nordstrom's site and it's currently sold out. Darn! Not the best timing for this post, but I'm sure it'll come back in stock for the holidays. I linked to her website if you want to check out her other products. Most are dual purpose which is great!

All this being said, there's nothing that looks better on women than a smile. Had to say it.

I've used lip scrubs in the past, the most notable being by the brand Fresh. I liked it enough to use it up, but not so much that I repurchased as soon as it ran out.

My love for Sara Happ lip slip runs deep. I live in a dry, warm climate that gets really windy, and so my lips are usually also very dry. I have a tendency to lick or even bite them (a nervous habit I've had since I was a kid) and although I try my best to leave them alone, I manage to dry them out anyway. One thing that has helped is her lip balm, but another recent discovery is her lip scrub. Think of a lip scrub like a body scrub, meaning that its purpose is to exfoliate and prepare your lips for other products like lipstick and gloss. It helps ensure a smooth base for anything you decide to use. Liquid lipsticks are super trendy at the moment. Pretty, yes... but very drying!

The consistency is almost like wet sand. It's effective enough to slough off dry, chapped skin but it isn't harsh either. And the smell! The smell is so decadent! It literally smells like the red velvet cake that we had at our wedding. Part chocolate, part I don't know what but it's amazing I haven't eaten this little tub for dessert. I thought before opening the package that it would have an artificially sweet scent, but that's not the case. It smells like the real thing.

I use it about twice a week at night during my skincare routine. Then I follow it up with the lip slip and the next morning, my pout is soft and moisturized. I highly recommend treating yourself. This particular "flavor" is limited edition, but Sara Happ has a ton of other delectable scents if you're not into red velvet. Which is hard to believe but I'll let it slide :)

These products were sent to me for consideration. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own and I am not being compensated in any way.

I've used these products consistently for over a month and overall have mixed feelings on two of the four. First, I'll start with my favorite and go down the list to the product I don't think is that unique.

The barest lip color in shade 05 - In the Buff ($22.00): I was a bit timid when I opened the package and saw this color. I loved the sleek silver tube as it looks luxurious, but I was worried that this particular shade was going to be far too dark for my light complexion. However, because this product is a lipstick and lip balm hybrid, I was surprised at just how sheer and buildable it truly is. The first swipe is a nice "my lips but better" but when I do a second coat, the color is a darker nude with hints of berry and brown. Of course it will look different on everyone depending on your skin tone but I love this Fall ready color. The formula itself is soft, buttery, and moisturizing, and there isn't really much of a scent that I can detect. It is definitely a standout from all the products I have tried from the line. I would love to try other shades because the dual formula is so lovely.

Beam Team Hydrate + Glow ($42.00): Another standout from the line and one that I recommend trying because I would also buy this on my own. This is a two-in-one, like many of The Estee Edit's products. Have you ladies heard about the glowtion trend that is popular right now? I think a lot of us like to achieve a dewy complexion, and a great way to go about that is by using a moisturizer with illuminating properties already built in. Think of it as a highlighting moisturizer. I love using this on days where I don't wear makeup! It creates the appearance of beautiful skin without the need for foundation. It evens my skin tone and blurs pores and spots. I have also used it underneath my makeup too, and it's the perfect primer. It adds just the right amount of soft golden color. Again, I was concerned that this product would make my skin look like a disco ball - too shiny. But the illumination is very subtle, even when worn alone. It also has a touch-on shimmer concentrate in the flip cap, which is nice on cheekbones as a targeted highlight. Admittedly, I don't use that option too often but it's a clever addition.

Pore Vanishing Stick ($28.00): This product feels like a silicone primer in a portable stick form. It reminds me of other products I have tried that blur the appearance of large pores. I like this on bare skin because it glides on smoothly. I swipe it across my nose and cheeks which is where most people have noticeable pores. However, when I try to use it underneath or over foundation, the product seems to disappear and no longer serves its purpose. Ultimately, I can't recommend it because the staying power isn't there and it doesn't perform as promised. I think the Beam Team is better at evening and priming the skin.

Flash Illuminator in Day Light ($28.00): This is a highlighting liquid that really packs a punch. Too much for my taste. I think if I had one of the lighter shades, I would appreciate this product a bit more but because it's so dramatic, I only use it sparingly on my arms and legs mixed with my regular lotion. It does leave a beautiful peachy glow (not glitter, just sheen), but there are a hundred different companies that already do liquid highlighters and because of that, I don't recommend running out and buying this. Just not unique enough!

Swatches (with flash): The barest lip color in 05, flash illuminator in day light, beam team hydrate + glow in sun loving bronze

Let's sum this review up shall we? Would I buy this on my own?

The Barest Lip Color: Yes. Smooth buttery formula and buildable color

Beam Team Hydrate + Glow: Yes. Multipurpose product that creates a beautiful complexion with little effort

Pore Vanishing Stick: No. Doesn't work as promised

Flash Illuminator: No. Not unique to really any brand. It's been done to death
