This edition of monthly reads involves a question that every girl gets asked at some point in her life! "Please share a pic of your engagement ring and tell us the story behind it." I smiled when I read this, as it was September 13th last year when my fiance popped the question. It's almost the first year anniversary of our engagement! We are getting married September 21st, 2013.

He proposed when we went to vegas for my birthday. I had no clue. After 5 years of (mostly) blissful coupledom, I was quite comfortable with our relationship status. Of course, everyone around us started to get itchy, asking questions about when we were planning on finally making things official. I was getting itchy too.

Apparently, my friends and family are much better secret keepers then I had previously thought. I give them credit! Especially my best friend. We always promised each other that when the time came, we would "steer" our guys into the right direction. Meaning, we would help them go ring shopping! Who knows your taste better then your best girlfriend? Or guyfriend.

So everyone knew that he was planning on proposing and I had no clue. He proposed in the Mirage Casino, right after a fancy dinner in which I didn't eat much because I was in the midst of a panic attack. I know I've mentioned this before, but I suffer from terrible generalized anxiety. I've been struggling with it since I was a little kid. It was pretty severe last year, and when we were eating dinner that night, I had a full-blown melt down at the table. He rubbed my back and tried to relax me as we walked out of the restaurant and made our way to the garden area that stands in the center of the casino. He proposed to settle my nerves I guess :)

It was beautiful. Totally ridiculous in some ways, and definitely a bit awkward. I always envisioned we would be alone. Instead, we had a huge crowd around us as he got down on one knee. I was shaking. He was tearing up. Strangers oohed and ahhed.

It was perfect :)

So...I'm looking forward to reading everyone's story! If you are engaged or married, feel free to share your story in the comments below!

  1. awww happy one year engagement :) and looking forward to more wedding posts too :) I love this types of posts.

My husband proposed to me on our 3rd dating anniversary at the same location he had taken me on our first date. We were engaged for 1.5 years before getting married. Now it's been 10 years (almost) together and a baby, yet it keeps getting better ;)

P.S. I suffer from anxiety too :( it was at its peak when i was pregnant and now slowly improving again

    1. Thanks Andi :) Yeah, I've had anxiety for as long as I can remember. In grade school, I was always in the nurse's office sick to my stomach. I had an upset stomach all the time, along with really bad panic attacks where I couldn't breathe and I thought I was dying. I should probably be on medication for it, but instead I see a therapist. I think Nate really calms my nerves, he has been a tremendous support. I don't always manage it well. Truthfully, I have good and bad days. It's something I'll always have to work through in my life. I just don't want it to define me anymore :)

The polish is by OPI, but I can't remember the name! I'll wear it again soon and I'll be sure to name it in a post!

  12. What a great story! While I always get a little jealous over the girls that have a perfectly staged proposal (I was up on the "Eiffel Tower" at the Paris casino last year and witnessed a surprise proposal, I think I cried more than the actual two that got engaged!), my own Husband proposed to me in what wasn't the "perfect" setting and I wouldn't have it any other way. I also didn't realize that you suffered from generalized anxiety. I have a good friend that has suffered with it on and off throughout her life, and I know how frustrating it can be for her, since the most random things trigger it. It can be an awful, debilitating, uncontrollable, and tremendously misunderstood disorder (disease?), so my heart is with you there. *hugs*

(And oh yes, I'm with everyone else--such a pretty ring, & such pretty nails!)

    1. Awwww, thank you Chloe <3 That means a lot to me, I appreciate it! It's definitely one of those things that I can't fully explain. I think most people who don't suffer from it just expect you to get over it, but it's not that easy...It can be very debilitating! I just have to manage it the best I can :)

  16. Aw so cute!! It's funny how every girl envisions her "moment" & when you do get engaged it's nothing like you imagined! I thought I would be alone, too, but my fiance proposed to me in the middle of a restaurant! Haha I was so nervous & confused that it didn't even sink in until we left dinner & I called my mom! I think I then cried for 3 days straight!

Congrats on your engagement! We're getting married June 8th, 2013 & I have to say every step of our engagement & wedding planning has brought us to a whole new level of close.

    xoxo Shauna
